On Period Dramas
Apr. 24th, 2012 02:17 pmConfession: I have a hard time watching medieval/fantasy costume dramas anymore, because they are all invariably set in the same misogynistic era of Europe. Sure, there's the token kickass tomboy or manipulative Lady Macbeth, but the overall societal structure just serves to remind me of the oppressive WASP patriarchy - and especially how it dictates women's sexuality - and I can't get past that to enjoy the rest of the story.
Can anyone recommend me a series that radically upends this stereotype? Of all the settings, you'd think a fantasy would take the most liberties with challenging gender roles, traditional family structures, in essence, the norms that we take for granted in real life.
